It’ll take you to the company’s website which is plagued with malware. Luckily, my antivirus caught it. I’d give it a higher rating, if I wasn’t so leery of it infecting my computer.
There is no malware on RDGAudio’s website. That said, inexperienced music producers can benefit from having access to a set of presets that can work as a starting point. More info: RoughRider3. More importantly, it is one of the best LA-2A plugins you can get, free or not. Perfect for compressing vocals and useful on instrument channels and the master bus. The list of features continues with the sidechain input and the ability to fine-tune the amount of drive added to the signal. The user can also choose between two metering modes: input volume and gain reduction.

With its adjustable release time and the excellent auto-gain feature, Frontier can be used to quickly boost the loudness of an audio signal without destroying the dynamics. I often set it to slow release and use it to amplify a drum mix or to gently even out the volume of stereo buses.
You can push the output volume above 0dB to apply saturation and additional dynamic range compression for a more distorted sound. A limiter is, by definition, a compressor with a fast attack time and a or higher compression ratio. So, you can learn how to set the threshold and release time parameters with Frontier and then move to a more complex compressor plugin later on.

Buttercomp2 is a favourite for very transparent compression, and Pressure4 is my go to for re-sculpting that muiness control is incredibly powerful.
Copy that! I always forget to mention Airwindows plugins somehow. If you can suggest a single compressor that stands out from the rest, I can add that, too. Pop, Buttercomp 2, and Logical are all great, but they each have a characteristic sound that makes them shine in specific use-cases. Pressure4 is more well-rounded. Thanks, everyone! I will feature Pressure4 as the top pick in the Airwindows section.
Downloading it right now to review. That and Pop are my 2 most used Airwindows compressors because they sound amazing just slapping them on a channel.
Pyewacket gives instant volume smoothing with a vintage style. Indeed, that one is quite new and it looks rather interesting. Thanks for the suggestion! Analog Obsession.
To my taste they are the best. Lets also keep in mind that not all of AO stuff is good. Some are obviously not finished, like missing VU functions even they are display like a pic which then does nothing. You can also create a softer effect by raising the Reduction control to around dB so that the pad pulses rather than being chopped.
The AutoFilter plug-in in Logic also has a sidechain input, but acts a little differently. As with the previous examples, the finesse of setting the effect relates to both the Envelope shape and the Threshold, so the envelope is triggered correctly. As you can see from the walkthrough, the possibilities of sidechaining are vast, especially when you consider the variety of plug-ins featuring sidechaining and the almost infinite number of sound combinations that can be used with them.
Experiment away! To illustrate how creative your approach can be, try activating all three sidechain treatments — Compressor, Gate, and AutoFilter at once. The result is a hybrid, with elements of each effect in the final output. Sidechaining can be a great way to claw back space in the mix. In this example, start by placing plenty of reverb and delay found on Bus 1 and 2 over the Moog synth lead.
The sound is big and spacious. Route both of the reverb and delay returns to a new, spare bus. Place a compressor across the summed FX return, although in this case, use the synth lead Moog Audio 1 as the sidechain source.
